City Council Approves Marker Commemorating Elvis Presley and Tom Petty Encounter |
In a unanimous decision on December 16, 2025, the Ocala City Council approved the installation of a historic marker at 117 East Silver Springs Boulevard.
This marker commemorates the 1961 meeting between Elvis Presley and a young Tom Petty, a pivotal moment in Ocala's musical history.
The initiative, titled "Elvis in Ocala, Tom Petty Inspired," was proposed by the Ocala Sunset Rotary Club, with Paul Stentiford representing the organization.
The marker will be placed at the southeast corner of the former Commercial Bank and Trust Company building, where scenes from Presley's film "Follow That Dream" were shot.
During the filming, a 10-year-old Tom Petty met Elvis at the northwest corner of SR 40 and Osceola, an encounter that profoundly influenced Petty's future musical career.
Aubrey Hale, Ocala's planning director, emphasized that the marker aligns with the city's goals of public education and cultural enrichment.
The Ocala Historic Preservation Advisory Board had previously recommended approval of the ordinance on November 6, 2025.
This new landmark adds to Ocala's rich tapestry of historic sites, including the ongoing revitalization of the Hotel Marion.
In early December 2025, the City Council approved a nearly $3 million incentive package to transform the 1927-era building into a boutique hotel, aiming to boost downtown activity and preserve the city's architectural heritage.
Additionally, the Ocala National Forest was recently recognized on National Geographic's "Best of the World 2025" list, highlighting the area's natural beauty and cultural significance.
These developments underscore Ocala's commitment to honoring its past while fostering growth and community engagement.
Residents and visitors alike can look forward to exploring these landmarks and experiencing the city's vibrant history firsthand. |
