City Council to Review Proposal Honoring 1961 Meeting That Inspired Rock Legend |
The Ocala Sunset Rotary Club has proposed the installation of a historic marker to commemorate the 1961 meeting between Elvis Presley and a young Tom Petty during the filming of "Follow That Dream."
This proposal is set to be reviewed by the Ocala City Council at their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, December 2.
In July 1961, Elvis Presley filmed scenes for "Follow That Dream" at the former Commercial Bank and Trust Company on East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. During this time, 10-year-old Tom Petty, a Gainesville native, visited the set with his uncle, Earl Jernigan, who was involved in the film's production. This brief encounter left a lasting impression on Petty, igniting his passion for rock 'n' roll.
The proposed marker, titled "Elvis in Ocala, Tom Petty Inspired," aims to honor this significant moment in music history. The Ocala City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 4 p.m. at Ocala City Hall (110 SE Watula Avenue).
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposal by attending the meeting or submitting comments to the council. |
