Ocala Advances Rails-to-Trails Initiative Amid Safety Concerns |
Community leaders push to transform inactive railways into public trails following recent derailments. |
Ocala is taking significant steps toward converting unused railway lines into multiuse trails, aiming to enhance community connectivity and safety.
Local advocate James Cook presented a detailed proposal to the Ocala City Council on October 7, 2025, emphasizing the potential of repurposing decommissioned railways for public benefit.
Cook highlighted the Florida Northern Railroad's 28.2-mile easement, noting that 9.1 miles of its north branch are currently inactive.
He outlined a phased approach: starting from the south side near MLK, progressing through downtown, and extending beyond Brick City Park to Candler.
Recent train derailments on June 19 and July 25 near Evergreen Cemetery and behind Cypresside Townhouses have intensified safety concerns.
Although these incidents resulted in no injuries or hazardous spills, they have accelerated discussions about converting the aging rail line into a safer, community-focused corridor.
Cook, a longtime Marion County resident and developer, has been monitoring the rail line's condition for over a year.
He expressed concerns about the antiquated tracks operating through neighborhoods and the city.
City Manager Pete Lee acknowledged Cook's dedication, stating, "Mr. Cook has been an asset to us. He's passionate about the project for sure."
Lee emphasized the need for ongoing discussions with the county and the rail line to address various considerations.
Cook's group, assembled at the city's request, proposes to redevelop the retired line through a 501(c)(3) organization over a five-year term, eventually returning the enhanced infrastructure to the City of Ocala and Marion County.
During his presentation, Cook provided images from the July derailment, showing train cars still on their sides and railroad tie track plates stacked along the railway.
These visuals underscore the urgency of addressing the hazards posed by old materials left along the tracks.
The proposed trail system aims to connect various communities, offering residents and visitors a safe and scenic route through Ocala.
As discussions progress, the city remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders to bring this vision to fruition. |
