On March 16, 2026, the Ocala community gathered to honor Norman Kenneth Schutt on his 100th birthday, celebrating his dedicated service as a World War II veteran in the Merchant Marines.
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Schutt grew up during the Great Depression, facing numerous challenges. Inspired by friends who had joined the Merchant Marines, he enlisted to serve his country and see the world. Between January 1944 and August 1945, Schutt made several transatlantic voyages, transporting troops and equipment vital to the war effort.
The birthday celebration at The Windsor of Ocala was attended by family, friends, community leaders, and representatives from veterans' organizations. Michelle Langdon from the American Legion presented Schutt with a certificate of honor, recognizing his courageous service in the name of freedom and democracy. Additionally, the Veterans Helping Veterans organization extended a Certificate of Gratitude, acknowledging Schutt's contributions to the nation.
Ocala City Councilman Jim Hilty Sr. commended Schutt, stating, "If it wasn't for what you guys did for us, we would not have a community to serve as we do today and have the freedom that we have."
Reflecting on his century-long journey, Schutt expressed gratitude for his life's experiences, emphasizing the importance of resilience and service. His story serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Greatest Generation. |
